You may need a tooth extracted for a number of reasons. They include:

  • Crowded or poorly positioned teeth
  • Damaged or decayed teeth that can’t be successfully restored
  • Periodontal disease that has resulted in loosening of the teeth
  • Infection of the teeth or the surrounding bone
  • Cysts, tumours, and other pathologies associated with the tooth

We understand that tooth extraction is sometimes necessary to protect the surrounding teeth in particular and your oral health in general. Our team of experienced dentists realises that for most people, the idea of having a tooth pulled arouses anxiety, and will take all necessary steps to ensure your comfort and make you aware of restoration options.

The tooth extraction process

Tooth extraction is usually an uncomplicated procedure. In some cases an incision is required to make root removal easier, and bone removal may even be necessary to better expose the tooth. The extraction site may be stitched up to minimise bleeding and allow the soft tissues to heal faster.

Prior to scheduling an extraction procedure, your dentist will examine and take x-rays of the tooth and any surrounding tissues to assess their condition. This will enable him or her to make the best restoration recommendations in your case.

Extracting wisdom teeth

Wisdom tooth extractions are usually performed as a response to acute problems such as pain, swelling, and infection. They can also be a preventative measure: if impacted wisdom teeth are left untreated, the following conditions may result.

  • Tooth crowding
  • Damage to nearby teeth such as cavities, gum disease, and even bone loss
  • Infection trapped under the gum tissue
  • Disease such as cyst or tumour formation

As with any dental procedure, your dentist will thoroughly examine the affected tooth and those surrounding it, and take x-rays to determine if there are any additional risk factors, such as decay or deterioration of nearby teeth. After a detailed assessment, your dentist will be able to present you with the best treatment options for your particular case.

Once the procedure is complete, you will rest under supervision in our office until you are ready to be taken home. Upon your discharge, you will receive post-operative instructions and, if necessary, medication to assist with any discomfort or swelling.
