Dentures are a form of restoration that replaces teeth lost due to trauma, injury, or dental disease. They are designed to resemble your natural teeth and may even make your smile brighter.
What types of dentures are available?
Dentures come in two varieties: partial and complete.
- Partial dentures: A partial denture fills in the gap left by one or more missing teeth. It consists of a nylon, plastic, or metal plate with replacement teeth attached. To wear it, you clip it onto some of your own teeth using metal clasps. These dentures are easy to remove and clean.
- Complete dentures: Also known as ‘false teeth’, complete dentures are fitted if all of your upper or lower teeth require replacing. They fit snugly over the gums and jaw bone.
If you require dentures, your dentist will make a recommendation based on factors like the following:
- The number of teeth that need to be replaced
- The condition of your gums and adjacent teeth
- Whether or not your denture will need to be secured by dental implants
Before fitting you with dentures, your dentist will explain the procedure in detail and advise you on how to clean and take care of your new appliance. He or she will also let you know what challenges you may expect as you become accustomed to wearing them.
How are dentures prepared and fitted?
Your dentist takes impressions of your mouth to create a model for your custom-made dentures. These impressions are then sent to a lab for fabrication.
In most instances dentures can be fitted immediately after your teeth have been removed, so you don?t have to go without teeth while your gums heal. But because gums and bone can shrink, especially during the first six months after tooth extraction, your dentures may need adjusting or relining. Your dentist will work with you to obtain a comfortable solution to any complications.
Our natural-looking dentures will make you feel great and look even better. Based on your goals and desired effect, we will craft a smile that compliments your mouth and face, resulting in an enhanced appearance you can be proud of.
