Because nearly 25 percent of people with oral cancer have no risk factors, we recommend mouth cancer screening as part of your regular dental maintenance programme. Routine check-ups are essential for early detection and successful treatment.

Common symptoms of oral cancer include:

  • Sores that bleed easily and fail to heal
  • Colour changes in mouth tissues
  • A change in one’s bite
  • Problems moving the tongue or jaw
  • Difficulty chewing and swallowing
  • Lumps or rough spots
  • Tenderness or numbness on the lips or in the mouth

Screening for mouth cancer

During a mouth cancer examination, your dentist will check your mouth and lips for unusual spots or sores. He or she may perform a brush test, which collects cells from a discolouration or sore, and screens them for cancer. If the results reveal the presence of suspicious cells, a biopsy will be performed.

Sores and other mouth irregularities should be reported to your dentist immediately. When caught in the early stages, oral cancer is treatable, so don’t delay.
