Dental veneers are commonly used in cosmetic dentistry to correct aesthetic issues such as crooked, damaged, or severely discoloured teeth. Made of porcelain or a natural-colour composite material, veneers fit over the front surface of affected teeth to improve their appearance and position. They are also used to close gaps when braces aren?t an option.

Properly applied, veneers are one of the most effective and dramatic improvements you can make to your smile.

How are dental veneers applied?

After a consultation confirms that you are a suitable candidate for dental veneers, your teeth be modified to remove a portion of the outer tooth enamel. This roughens the surface to enable better bonding and makes room for the veneer itself.

After shaping is complete, your dentist will take impressions of your teeth and send them to a laboratory for use in creating your new veneers. You may be required to wear temporary veneers to protect your modified teeth until the customised ones come back from the lab.

At the next appointment, your dentist will confirm that your new veneers fit properly and that they are the right size and colour. If necessary, they can be shaped and trimmed a little more before the final fitting. Before permanently bonding the veneers to your teeth using a composite resin cement, your dentist will clean your teeth thoroughly, to provide an ideal bonding surface.

With proper care, your new dental veneers should last for years. They will feel like a normal part of your teeth, but care should taken to protect them from chipping. Refrain from grinding your teeth or biting down into hard substances, and don?t chew on objects like pencils or paperclips.
