Many people have some type of gum problem and don’t even know it. Gum disease, which is the inflammation of the gums and neighbouring tissue, is the biggest cause of tooth loss in adults.

How does gum disease develop?

When bacterial plaque develops on your teeth and is left untreated, it hardens into tartar at and underneath the gum line. Tartar causes gum inflammation, which creates periodontal pockets that contain more bacteria and toxins. As the condition worsens, teeth may loosen and fall out and your jaw bone can even suffer damage.

Signs of gum disease include:

  • Red, swollen gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Receding gums
  • Bleeding while brushing and flossing
  • Chronic halitosis

Your dentist will assist you with preventative treatment plans such as cleaning and scaling, and recommend the use of fluoride gels and rinses. Should any of your teeth require deeper cleaning, your dentist will apply a local anaesthetic to ensure your comfort during the procedure.

How can gum disease be prevented?

When practiced regularly, the measures below can deter the onset of gum disease.

  • Brushing: Holding your brush at a 45 degree angle, cover each tooth with short circular movements. Cover the biting and inside surfaces as well to ensure a complete clean.
  • Flossing:  Apply dental floss back and forth between your teeth to remove debris that could lead to later decay and infection. Don’t forget to floss under the gum as well.
  • Interdental brushing:  Use interdental brushes to clear away plaque and debris that your regular brush can’t access.

By having regular dental check-ups and following good oral hygiene practices, you can prevent the onset of gum disease and keep your smile clean and healthy.
