When you lose a tooth, the resulting gap between your teeth isn’t just unattractive. It can also cause problems such as difficulty talking and chewing, gum disease, and even temporomandibular joint (TMJ) complications. Teeth surrounding the empty space may even start shifting into it, affecting your bite and causing pain.

Our office specialises in creating and fitting dental bridges, which will fill these gaps caused by missing teeth. They are cemented to the surrounding teeth, which are first trimmed down and capped with a crown. A pontic, or replacement tooth, is attached to the crowned teeth to create a bridge.

We can provide you with a permanent bridge, also known as a fixed partial denture, or a partial denture, which may be removed and cleaned. Either option will restore your ability to flash a confident and attractive smile. A bridge will also:

  • Restore your ability to speak and eat properly
  • Properly position your bite to take stress off your other teeth
  • Prevent surrounding teeth from shifting into the gap
  • Maintain the shape of your face

What types of bridges are used?

There are many types of dental bridges, each made of different materials ([porcelain, ceramic) and suited for certain areas of the mouth and / or particular situations.

  • Adhesive bridges: These bridges are attached to the inside of the surrounding teeth.
  • Regular bridges: Conventional bridges are supported by the neighbouring teeth, which are shaped to support it before the bridge is cemented in place. These bridges can be made of tooth-coloured materials for a wholly natural effect.
  • Resin-attached bridges: Normally applied to replace a single front tooth, these bridges are secured to an adjacent tooth using a resin-coated ‘wing’.
  • Implant-retained bridges: These bridges restore missing teeth using dental implants.

How are bridges applied?

Being fitted with bridges requires two visits to your dentist. At the first appointment, the teeth neighbouring the gap will be shaped to support crowns, and impressions will be taken of your teeth to serve as a model for the replacement tooth, crowns, and bridge. Your dentist will also fit you with a temporary bridge to protect your teeth and gums. During the second appointment, you will receive the new, permanent bridge.

It is important to remember that when you wear a dental bridge, high levels of oral hygiene are necessary. Failure to take proper care can result in decay forming beneath the appliance. Your dentist will provide you with detailed instructions on how to clean and care for your new bridge so that the neighbouring teeth stay healthy.
